A novel solution from IIT Delhi integrates mosquito repellency into everyday laundry, transforming clothes into a protective shield. This innovation offers an effortless, seamless layer of protection that lasts from dawn till dusk and is regenerated with every wash. The development originates from the Department of Textile and Fibre Engineering at IIT Delhi.
The Science Behind the Mosquito-Repellent Washing Powder
This innovative detergent, available in powder and liquid forms, is engineered to bind active components directly to fabric fibers during the washing process. These formulated chemicals interfere with mosquitoes’ sensitive smell and taste receptors, making treated clothing unattractive to them. This significantly reduces their inclination to land on or bite through the fabric.
Researchers highlight that ordinary textiles offer little resistance to mosquito proboscis. By making clothing surfaces unwelcoming to mosquitoes, the risk of bites is sharply reduced. This provides a proactive defense often lacking in traditional methods. The project is led by Professor Javed Nabibaksha Sheikh and his team at IIT Delhi.
Rigorous Testing: Proving the Effectiveness
The IIT Delhi team has rigorously validated their mosquito-repellent washing powder using the globally recognized “hand-in-cage” method in a commercial laboratory.
In this test, volunteers placed hands covered with fabric pre-washed with the detergent into cages filled with mosquitoes. The results consistently showed a dramatic decline in mosquito landings on treated fabrics compared to untreated ones. These repeated trials provide compelling evidence of the detergent’s ability to create an effective, long-lasting mosquito shield, offering users peace of mind.
